Neuropsychological & Developmental Assessment

Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between the brain, behavior, and development. Neuropsychological and developmental assessments are designed to help understand how an individual thinks, learns, communicates, regulates emotions, and navigates the demands of everyday life. Through comprehensive evaluation, these assessments provide insight into an individual's cognitive, academic, social, emotional, and adaptive functioning, helping patients and their families better understand both strengths and areas of challenge.

A neuropsychological assessment examines a range of cognitive processes, including attention, executive functioning, language, learning and memory, processing speed, visual-spatial skills, problem-solving, and emotional functioning. Developmental assessments focus on early developmental skills such as communication, social interaction, play, adaptive functioning, and emerging cognitive abilities. These evaluations can help identify factors contributing to difficulties in learning, behavior, social relationships, emotional regulation, or everyday functioning. They create a detailed profile of a person’s unique developmental and/or neurocognitive and behavioral strengths and needs.

Developmental and neuropsychological evaluations are often sought when individuals, families, educators, or healthcare providers have questions about developmental progress, school or work performance, attention, social communication, or diagnostic profiles. Comprehensive assessments can clarify the underlying causes of these concerns and provide practical, individualized recommendations to support success at home, in school, work, and in the community.

Unlike school-based evaluations, which are typically designed to determine eligibility for educational services, neuropsychological and developmental evaluations provide a broader understanding of the whole child. Information is integrated from standardized testing, caregiver interviews, developmental history, behavioral observations, educational records, and input from teachers and other providers. This comprehensive approach allows for a nuanced understanding of how cognitive, developmental, emotional, and environmental factors interact to influence functioning.

An important goal of assessment is diagnostic clarification. Evaluations may help establish, confirm, or differentiate among a range of neurodevelopmental, learning, and mental health conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Specific Learning Disorders, language disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, anxiety disorders, depression, and other social-emotional concerns. Assessments are particularly valuable when symptoms overlap across multiple areas or when a child's presentation is complex and difficult to understand.

Atlantic Assessment offers specialized expertise in the assessment of young children, including toddlers and preschoolers, as well as school-age children, adolescents, and adults. Evaluations can help identify developmental differences early in life, clarify concerns related to autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions, and guide intervention planning during critical periods of development. They also can help an older child, teen, or adult better understand their profile of strengths and challenges, which can inform treatment, behavioral, educational/occupational, and adaptive supports.

Ultimately, neuropsychological and developmental evaluations provide a roadmap for understanding how a person learns, develops, and interacts with/experiences the world. By identifying both strengths and areas of vulnerability, these assessments support informed decision-making and help individuals, families, educators, and providers create effective plans that foster long-term success and well-being.

Atlantic Assessment also provides consultations related to IEP and 504 plan reviews and regular follow-up appointments to ensure parents are supported in implementing recommendations after assessments are completed.
